Linen
Linen is a textile made from the fibers of the flax plant. It is one of the oldest known fabrics, with evidence of its use dating back to at least 8,000 BC. Linen was very popular in ancient Egypt. The word "linen" comes from the Latin for flax (linum). Flax is an annual plant that grows to a height of about 1-2 meters (3-6 feet). The plants have blue flowers and slender leaves. The part of the plant that is used to make linen fiber is found just under the bark of the stem. To harvest linen fiber, farmers first strip off this outer layer by hand or machine. The inner woody core (known as pith) remains behind and can be used for other purposes such as animal bedding or composting. After harvesting, the flax stalks are then "retted." This process involves soaking them in water for several weeks until they start to decompose slightly. This makes it easier to separate out the individual fibers which are then spun into yarn and woven into cloth on a loom. Linen fabric has many characteristics that make it unique among other fabrics. It's strong and durable yet still soft and comfortable against your skin . It becomes more absorbent and softer with each washing. It dries quickly after getting wet. Wrinkles less than other natural fibers like cotton. These qualities make linen ideal for making clothing and fashion acessories. Because it doesn't hold onto dirt and stains easily, it become more and more favourite textile!
